In areas with limited water sources, bighorn sheep will often move to areas with more abundant water during periods of drought, such as in the Great Basin region where they move to areas with more reliable water sources during dry periods. In addition, bighorn sheep tend to prefer areas with south-facing slopes and rocky outcroppings to escape harsh winds and precipitation.

Wind and Topography

Wind speed and direction can also impact bighorn sheep movement, particularly in areas with complex topography. In the Wasatch Mountains of Utah, for example, bighorn sheep have been observed to move to areas with more sheltered terrain during periods of high winds, such as above 9,000 feet where the wind is blocked by ridges and peaks. By understanding these weather-driven migration patterns, wildlife managers and researchers can better predict and manage bighorn sheep populations in different regions.
