Planning and Preparation

When installing a batch heater in a cabin, it’s essential to plan the setup carefully. The stove coils should be connected to a thermosiphon system, which circulates water between the stove and a hot water tank. A minimum of 2-3 feet of head (vertical distance) is required to ensure proper circulation. The water tank should be positioned above the stove or near the highest point of the cabin to facilitate natural circulation. Calculate the required pipe size and length according to the stove’s BTU output and the desired water temperature.

Coil Selection and Installation

Choose stove coils that match the stove’s BTU output and the desired water temperature. The coils should be installed at an angle of 45-60 degrees to ensure proper water circulation. Use a minimum of 1/2-inch diameter copper tubing for the coils and connect them to the thermosiphon system. Secure the coils to the stove using a heat-resistant clamp or bracket. Ensure the coils are clean and free of debris to prevent contamination of the water.

Thermosiphon System Setup

Connect the stove coils to the thermosiphon system, which consists of a water tank, a coil, and a return line. The tank should be filled with a mixture of water and antifreeze (50/50 ratio) to prevent freezing. The coil should be submerged in the water tank, and the return line should be connected to the stove. Adjust the thermosiphon system to ensure proper circulation and temperature control. Monitor the system’s performance and make adjustments as needed to maintain optimal hot water production.
