Prepper Assessment
Living in this area offers a warm climate with an annual mean temperature of 74.0°F and a robust growing season, suitable for USDA zone 11a. The terrain is predominantly rural, with 83% of the county classified as such, providing ample space for self-sufficient living. However, the humid environment, with 51.1 inches of rainfall per year, may require careful management of water resources, particularly during dry spells.
Natural hazards present notable risks, particularly wildfires and hurricanes, both ranked 88 by FEMA, indicating a significant threat. Lightning and strong winds are also considerable concerns, with ranks of 85 and 70, respectively. The population density is relatively low at 15.4 people per square mile, which may offer some peace but also limits access to services. The median home price of $91,300 is affordable, but the median household income of $37,221 suggests economic challenges.
This county may suit those who prioritize rural living and can manage the risks associated with natural disasters. Individuals experienced in disaster preparedness and self-sufficiency would thrive here, while those reliant on urban amenities may struggle. A dealbreaker for some could be the high risk of hurricanes, while the low housing costs and rural setting may be a hidden gem for others looking for affordability and space.
