Prepper Assessment
This area features a humid subtropical climate with an annual mean temperature of 68.3°F, allowing for a growing season suitable for a variety of crops. The terrain is predominantly flat, with access to ample rainfall of 50.5 inches per year, which is beneficial for agriculture and self-sufficient living. However, the population density of 90.5 people per square mile means that while some areas are rural, others may feel more urbanized, potentially limiting the sense of remoteness sought by some homesteaders.
Natural hazards are a significant consideration, with hurricanes ranked as the primary threat at FEMA rank 91, followed by wildfire risk at 84 and coastal flooding at 72. The area's disaster percentile is at 54, indicating a moderate level of risk. Although the violence percentile is 44, suggesting a relatively safer environment, the higher density may bring some concerns for those prioritizing security. Housing costs are moderate, with a median home price of $213,400, but this may still be a barrier for some prospective residents.
This county may suit those seeking a warmer climate with a longer growing season and who are prepared for the risks of hurricanes and flooding. Individuals with experience in disaster preparedness and a willingness to engage with a community that has both rural and urban characteristics could thrive here. Conversely, those looking for extreme remoteness or who are averse to dealing with the risks associated with coastal living may find this area less appealing.
