Prepper Assessment

This area features a humid climate with an annual mean temperature of 49.6°F and about 39.9 inches of rainfall per year. The growing season is moderate, typical of USDA zone 7b, allowing for a variety of crops. However, the county's relatively high population density of 594.7 people per square mile may limit opportunities for extensive self-sufficient living. The terrain is generally flat, which can ease farming but may also lead to challenges with flooding, especially given the riverine flood risk.

Natural hazards are a significant concern in this county, with a FEMA disaster percentile ranking of 86, indicating a higher likelihood of experiencing severe weather events. Cold waves, hail, strong winds, tornadoes, and riverine flooding are notable risks. Additionally, the area has a violence percentile of 43, suggesting a moderate level of safety. While the median home price is relatively affordable at $165,700, the high population density may lead to increased competition for resources and land.

This county may be suitable for individuals or families who prioritize access to urban amenities while still desiring some rural characteristics, given the 10% rural population. Those who thrive here might be adaptable to a more suburban lifestyle and prepared for the risks of severe weather. However, individuals seeking a more isolated, self-sufficient homesteading experience may find the high density and natural hazards to be dealbreakers, limiting their ability to create a sustainable, independent lifestyle.
