Prepper Assessment
Living in this area offers a predominantly rural lifestyle, characterized by a low population density of 3.0 people per square mile. The climate features an annual mean temperature of 52.4°F with a growing season suitable for USDA zone 7b. Residents can expect 21.8 inches of rainfall annually, though water availability is limited due to a dry sub-humid classification. This region has strengths in self-sufficient living, particularly for those who can adapt to the climate and utilize local resources effectively.
However, there are notable risks to consider. The county ranks high for hail (FEMA rank 91) and drought (rank 76), which can impact agricultural efforts. Strong winds (rank 61) and winter weather (rank 48) also pose challenges. While the area has a relatively low violence percentile of 58, indicating a moderate safety level, the cost of living is reasonable with a median home price of $76,100. The effective property tax rate stands at 1.69%, which may appeal to budget-conscious individuals.
This county may be a good fit for those who appreciate a quiet, rural lifestyle and have the skills to manage the challenges of limited water resources and agricultural risks. Homesteaders with experience in dryland farming and resilience to natural hazards may thrive here. Conversely, individuals seeking urban amenities, high-speed internet (56% broadband subscription), or those uncomfortable with potential weather-related disruptions may find this area less suitable for their needs.
