Prepper Assessment
Rice County features a predominantly rural landscape with a low population density of 13.0 people per square mile, offering ample space for self-sufficient living. The climate is classified as humid with an annual mean temperature of 55.6°F and 29.5 inches of rainfall per year, supporting a growing season suitable for various crops within USDA zone 8a. However, summer highs can reach 92.4°F, which may challenge certain agricultural practices without adequate water management.
This area faces notable risks, particularly from hail (FEMA rank 87), ice storms (80), and wildfires (77), which could impact both infrastructure and agricultural output. The population density percentile of 21 suggests a relatively emptier environment, but the violence percentile of 88 indicates a lower risk of crime. The median home price of $87,700 is affordable, yet potential residents should consider the effectiveness of local broadband access, which stands at 65%.
Rice County may appeal to those seeking a quiet, rural lifestyle and who are prepared for the risks associated with severe weather. Individuals with experience in agriculture or self-sufficiency would likely thrive here, while urban dwellers accustomed to amenities and services might struggle with the area's remoteness. A potential dealbreaker for some could be the region's susceptibility to severe weather events, while the affordable housing market presents a hidden gem for budget-conscious homesteaders.
