Prepper Assessment
Living in this area is characterized by a humid subtropical climate, with an annual mean temperature of 61.9°F and about 58 inches of rainfall per year. The growing season is relatively long, benefiting from USDA zone 9a, which allows for a variety of crops. The terrain is predominantly rural, which may provide ample space for self-sufficient living, although access to water sources and fertile land can vary across the county.
Natural hazards pose notable risks, with earthquakes ranked at FEMA hazard level 85 and tornadoes at 77, indicating a significant chance of severe weather events. The area's violence percentile is at 35, suggesting a moderate level of safety compared to other regions. Additionally, the median home price of $136,700 may be appealing, but the effective property tax rate of 0.65% could impact overall affordability for potential residents.
This county may suit individuals or families looking for a rural lifestyle with space for gardening and livestock, particularly those who are comfortable with the associated risks of natural disasters. However, those who prefer urban amenities or require high-speed internet access may find the 35% broadband subscription rate limiting. The combination of natural hazards and moderate population density may deter some, while others may see it as a hidden gem for self-sufficiency.
