Prepper Assessment
Living in this area provides a humid subtropical climate with an annual mean temperature of 65.5°F and an average of 57 inches of rainfall per year. The growing season is favorable for various crops, falling within USDA zone 9b. However, the terrain is relatively flat, with proximity to the Mississippi River, which can provide water sources but may also pose flooding risks. The population density is moderate at 72.5 people per square mile, allowing for a mix of rural and urban living.
The county faces significant natural hazards, including a high risk of drought (100) and hail (98), alongside notable threats from tornadoes (92) and strong winds (90). A violence percentile of 95 indicates a higher risk of crime, which may deter some potential residents. While the cost of living is relatively low with a median home price of $142,100 and a property tax rate of 0.80%, the economic environment may not support everyone, particularly those seeking more stable job markets.
This county may suit individuals or families who prioritize affordability and can adapt to the climate and natural hazards present. Those who thrive here are likely self-sufficient homesteaders with an ability to manage risks associated with extreme weather. However, individuals seeking a safer, more stable environment or those uncomfortable with the high violence percentile may find it challenging to settle successfully in this area.
