Prepper Assessment
Located in a humid climate with an annual mean temperature of 62.2°F, this area experiences a growing season suitable for various crops, particularly in USDA zone 9a. The terrain is characterized by a mix of rural landscapes, with 63% of the population living outside urban areas. Rainfall averages 53.1 inches per year, providing ample water resources for self-sufficient living, although the humidity may pose challenges for certain crops and livestock management.
Natural hazards are a significant concern, with the county ranked highly for hurricane risk (FEMA rank 98) and winter weather (rank 94). Coastal flooding (rank 82) and tornadoes (rank 75) also present risks to residents. The area has a violence percentile of 76/100, indicating a higher prevalence of violence compared to many other regions. While housing is relatively affordable with a median home price of $159,900, potential homesteaders should weigh these risks against the benefits of rural living.
This county may suit those experienced in managing the challenges of coastal living and natural disasters, particularly individuals who prioritize access to water and a warm climate for growing food. However, it may not be ideal for those seeking a completely safe and remote environment, as the risks from hurricanes and violence could deter less prepared individuals. A dealbreaker for many homesteaders could be the high incidence of severe weather events, while the hidden gem may be the affordable housing market.
