Prepper Assessment
Living in this area offers a mix of rural and suburban environments, with a population density of 281.8 people per square mile. The climate is characterized by an annual mean temperature of 49.5°F and ample rainfall at 47.5 inches per year, supporting a growing season suitable for a variety of crops, particularly in USDA zone 7b. However, the terrain's potential for landslides and flooding may limit certain self-sufficient practices and require careful site selection for homesteading.
Natural hazards pose notable risks, with strong winds (FEMA rank 98) and cold waves (rank 94) being the most significant concerns. Riverine flooding (rank 77) and winter weather (rank 79) also present challenges. While the area has a low violence percentile (2/100), reflecting safety, the high disaster percentile (78/100) suggests that residents should be prepared for a range of environmental stresses. Additionally, the median home price of $322,300 may be a barrier for some potential homesteaders.
This county may suit those looking for a semi-rural lifestyle with access to metropolitan amenities, particularly individuals who can afford the median home price and are prepared for the area's natural hazards. However, those seeking complete isolation or lower costs may find the population density and housing expenses prohibitive. The hidden gem here is the relatively low violence rate, making it a safer option compared to many urban environments.
