Prepper Assessment
This area features a humid subtropical climate with an annual mean temperature of 63.5°F and an average annual rainfall of 46.6 inches, supporting a growing season suitable for a variety of crops. The terrain is predominantly flat with a mix of rural and suburban development, offering some space for self-sufficient living. However, the population density of 436 people per square mile may limit the degree of remoteness that potential homesteaders seek.
Natural hazards pose significant risks, with tornadoes ranked at FEMA's highest level (98) and other threats including ice storms and strong winds. The disaster percentile is high at 91, indicating a higher likelihood of severe weather events. Additionally, the area has a relatively higher violence percentile at 61, suggesting moderate safety concerns. The median home price of $197,600 and a property tax rate of 0.55% may be appealing, but the cost of living should be carefully considered against potential risks.
This county may suit individuals looking for a blend of rural and suburban living, particularly those comfortable with the risks associated with severe weather. Homesteaders with a focus on community and access to urban amenities could thrive here. However, those seeking isolation or minimal risk from natural disasters may find this area less suitable, as the high disaster percentile and population density could be dealbreakers for a more self-sufficient lifestyle.
