Prepper Assessment
Living in this area offers a predominantly rural lifestyle with a low population density of 3.9 people per square mile, providing ample space for self-sufficient living. The climate features an annual mean temperature of 46.3°F, with 22.2 inches of rainfall per year, supporting a growing season suitable for a variety of crops in USDA zone 6b. However, the cold winters, with lows averaging 7.9°F, may limit some agricultural activities during that season.
Natural hazards present notable challenges, with cold waves ranked at 77 and wildfires at 76 on the FEMA scale. Winter weather ranks at 51, indicating a need for preparedness during harsh conditions. While the violence percentile is relatively moderate at 54, the area’s remoteness may also pose risks related to access to emergency services. The median home price of $103,800 is affordable, but the low broadband subscription rate of 32% may hinder remote work opportunities.
This county may appeal to those seeking a quiet, rural lifestyle with opportunities for homesteading, particularly individuals experienced in managing cold weather and remote living. Those who thrive here are likely to have the skills and resources to navigate the seasonal challenges. However, individuals reliant on consistent internet access or those uncomfortable with isolation may find this area less suitable for their needs.
