Prepper Assessment
This area features a humid climate with an annual mean temperature of 65.2°F and approximately 40.5 inches of rainfall per year. The growing season is favorable for various crops, aided by its USDA zone 9b classification. However, the county’s high population density of 968.5 people per square mile may limit the availability of land for self-sufficient living. The terrain is relatively flat, which can be advantageous for farming but may also present challenges in terms of water drainage and soil erosion.
Natural hazards are a significant concern, with tornadoes (FEMA rank 94) and hailstorms (rank 93) posing the greatest risks. The area also faces heat waves (rank 90) and strong winds (rank 74), which could impact outdoor activities and crop yields. Additionally, the high population density and urban proximity may increase the likelihood of crime, although the violence percentile is relatively low at 18/100. The median home price of $363,500 could be a barrier for potential homesteaders seeking affordable land.
This county may be suitable for individuals seeking a suburban lifestyle with access to urban amenities, particularly those who can afford the higher cost of living. However, those looking for a remote, self-sufficient homestead may find the population density and natural hazards challenging. The hidden gem here is the broadband availability, with 84% of households connected, which could support remote work or online businesses for those who adapt to the local environment.
