Prepper Assessment
Living in this area is characterized by a semi-arid climate with an annual mean temperature of 65.3°F and an average annual rainfall of 22.6 inches. The growing season is suitable for crops associated with USDA zone 9a, allowing for a variety of fruits and vegetables. The terrain includes the Edwards Plateau, which can offer some remoteness, but the population density of 78.1 people per square mile may limit opportunities for absolute privacy and solitude.
Natural hazards are a significant consideration, with drought (ranked 98) posing the greatest risk, along with hail, winter weather, wildfire, and heat waves. The disaster percentile is 77, indicating a higher likelihood of experiencing adverse conditions. While the median home price is relatively affordable at $177,800, the area's violence percentile at 59 suggests a moderate level of safety concerns that may deter some potential residents.
This county may appeal to those who can adapt to a semi-arid environment and are prepared for the challenges of drought and heat. Individuals seeking a more communal lifestyle in a moderate climate might thrive here, particularly if they are resourceful and self-sufficient. However, those requiring consistent access to abundant water or a low-risk environment may find the conditions less favorable for long-term homesteading.
