Prepper Assessment

Living in this area offers a mix of rural charm and manageable climate, with an annual mean temperature of 47.6°F and 14.7 inches of rainfall each year. The growing season is moderate, suitable for various crops in USDA zone 7a, although the dry sub-humid classification indicates water conservation will be essential. The county's low population density of 5.6 people per square mile allows for ample space and privacy, making it a potentially attractive setting for self-sufficient living.

This county faces several natural hazards, including a high risk of hail (FEMA rank 87) and winter weather (rank 80), which could impact agriculture and daily life. While the violence percentile is relatively low at 89, indicating a safer environment, the area does contend with drought risks (rank 55) that may affect water availability. Additionally, the median home price of $217,200, coupled with a median household income of $62,356, suggests that housing costs might be a barrier for some potential residents.

Goshen County could suit individuals or families seeking a quiet, rural lifestyle with a focus on farming or ranching, particularly those experienced in managing water resources. However, it may not be ideal for those who prefer urban amenities or who are unprepared for the challenges posed by the climate and natural hazards. A potential dealbreaker for many homesteaders could be the area's drought risk, while the low density and relative safety could be a hidden gem for those looking to escape city life.
